Beyond the Bible Story: How to Make RE the Subject They Actually Want to Do

Let’s be real for a sec. When you look at your weekly timetable, is Religious Education the subject you’re keenest to teach? Or is it the one you squeeze in on a Friday arvo, hoping the kids don’t ask too many tricky questions before the bell goes?

For heaps of teachers, RE can be a bit of a slog. It’s easy to fall into the "Read and Colour" trap: read a scripture passage, ask three comprehension questions and hand out a worksheet to keep them going. While it ticks the box, it rarely sparks any real interest. The students tune out, and a rich, complex history becomes just another chore. 1. Ditch "Passive Listening" for "Active Inquiry"

The quickest way to kill engagement is to treat students like empty vessels waiting to be filled with facts. The best RE lessons treat students like investigators. Instead of starting with the answer ("This story teaches us to be kind"), start with a provocation.

·       “Is it ever okay to break a promise?”

·       “Why do you reckon this character stood their ground when everyone else did a runner?”

When students have to dig for meaning, they actually own the lesson.

 

2. Connect the Ancient to the Playground

Scripture can feel pretty dusty to a modern student. The trick is bridging the gap between "Then" and "Now." Solid lesson planning takes the core theme of a passage - courage, betrayal, forgiveness, community - and immediately anchors it in their world.

• David and Goliath isn't just about a slingshot, it’s about what to do when you feel small and overwhelmed.
• The Parable of the Sower isn't just about farming, it’s about why some mates listen to advice and others ignore it.

 

3. Get Them Moving and Making (Hands-On Learning)

Kids weren't built to sit still on the carpet (or at a desk) for 45 minutes straight. If you want the message to stick, you’ve got to make it tactile.
